Jan 13, 2023, Hyderabad: CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, just wrapped up its Young Innovators Program (YIP) for the 10th consecutive year. Each year, CCMB invites applications from students from grades 8- 10 and conducts a public lecture by an eminent scientist. Prof Ullas Kolthur from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research gave this year’s public lecture on Dec 26, 2022, on food and metabolism, followed by a selection test. Based on their performance in the test, 25 students were selected among 200 applicants for the next level of the program from 4-13 Jan 2023. These students have not only come from Hyderabad but also from areas such as Karimnagar, Mahbubabad, Suryapet and Qutubullapur, covering both public and private schools.

During these ten days, the students participated in many hands-on activities, experiments, and in-depth discussions with scientists at CCMB. They visited labs across the three campuses of CCMB, working on cell biology, genes and genetics, structural biology, infectious disease biology, and ecology and conservation biology. In addition, they learned about entrepreneurship in life sciences and how Atal Incubation CentreCCMB supports entrepreneurship and innovation even among young students.

“Through programs like YIP, we want to reach out to young people and inform them of the advances in science and technology. We do this not because we want all of them to become scientists but because we live in a biotechnology age, and no matter what careers these students choose or the lives they lead; we hope they will be able to inform their communities about the power of life sciences and biotechnology.” said Dr Vinay Nandicoori, Director, CCMB.
